Be A Duck

Whether you want to know what people think of you or not, chances are, you will see, hear or experience something that makes it clear as a bell.

I was riding in the car with my teenage daughter and her friend. They were discussing something negative that someone had said about one of them. You can be sure it wasn’t said in person, directly to her. It was either over Snapchat, Instagram DM, text or some other channel that let the person saying it hide behind a screen.

People are so much uglier over text, email, Snapchat, etc. It does’t take much courage to type something mean and it usually isn’t a well thought out message. The words are generally an automatic response to a feeling. Feelings are temporary, the typed message is forever.

After listening to them discuss how mean this person is and accepting their opinion as fact and what everyone else thinks of them, I thought about how exhausting this must be. Rapid fire communication, 24/7, with no idea of what is coming your way. I am so thankful that I did not grow up with this limitless access to me. The other thing I have noticed is that the more successful you are, the more you will hear negative things said about you.

Trying to think of something encouraging to say that wasn’t eye roll worthy, I kept is short and simple. I said, “Be a duck, Let that stuff roll right off of you.”

They laughed and actually liked the advice. So, the next time you hear something negative that “someone” said about you, be a duck and let it roll right off of you like a raindrop.

Focus on the positive and waddle towards happiness and success!
