COOTIES….

Have you coughed in public lately? I bet you got some stares and looks of disapproval. Complete strangers have already decided that you have Covid and are spreading it like wildfire.

At a time where everyone is afraid of catching something, I am here to assure you that divorce is not contagious.

Nobody gets married with the intention of getting a divorce. Divorce happens for a variety of reasons and is usually no fun for anyone. At my age, I help a lot of couples who are going through a divorce, are recently divorced or secretly are wishing for one. One of the most common things I hear about is how their friends start treating them differently. It ranges from pity, avoidance, judgement, rumors and blaming.

I remember experiencing some of this during my divorce. I would see someone at little league and they’d take a hard right or left to avoid me. Some women stopped sitting by me in the stands and others gave me looks of “bless your heart.” It felt shitty. I always wondered how my divorce could be so upsetting to other women. It was basically like being a giant infectious disease.

If you know someone who is divorced, getting divorced or is hoping to get divorced, be gentle. You can still be near them, be their friend and even drink some of their margarita.

You can’t catch divorce, so be cool.

… finishing up this read! In Good Company, Arthur M. Blank gives multiple examples of how he has run his businesses, and that for good companies, purpose and profit can-and should-go hand in hand. I run my business with this philosophy and couldn’t agree more!
