I Don’t Want To!

It is easy to do the things that we want to do. Sometimes it’s necessary to do things that we don’t want to do. I used to cry and tell my dad that I didn’t want to do the dishes, clean my room, etc. I’ll never forget his response to one of my “I don’t want to” answers to doing a chore. 

Dad: “Marnie, go do the dishes.”

Me: “I don’t want to!”

Dad: “That is perfectly fine. You don’t have to want to do it BUT you do have to do it.”

Now, when I don’t want to do something that needs to be done, I remind myself that I don’t have to want to do it, I just need to do it. Separating how I feel about doing a dreaded task helps me get started and spares me the time of wishing it away.
