Let’s Get Schooled!

It’s that time of year again! There is something special about the beginning of a new school year. It’s a fresh start for the whole family and full of possibilities. I used to love school supplies shopping and setting up my new folders and backpack. Everything was new, organized and shiny like a fresh penny. Each year, I’d vow to keep everything in order for the duration of the school year. I can’t remember one time that I actually did it. After a few weeks, the newness would start to wear off. I didn’t consciously decide to become unorganized. It would start with not filing one piece of paper in the proper folder.  No biggie.

The continuation of making an exception for one paper added up quickly which resulted in a chaotic mess in my backpack. When finals rolled around, I had a hard time getting everything together in order to study for the exams. We were given reviews and told all of the answers could be found in our previous work. That would have been fantastic if I could have locate all of my completed assignments!

My reviews took a lot of time to complete because I spent so much time digging through my disorganized backpack just to find what could have been easily located if I had kept everything in order like I had planned. Here’s the thing. I didn’t plan on getting unorganized. It slowly happened after several small decisions not to file one paper.

The same thing happens to adults. We vow to eat healthy and make one small exception which turns into another and another. Before we know it, the number of “cheat” days are more than the days we stuck with our plan of eating healthy meals.

My kids return to school this week. I am going to pick a few things to commit to for the school semester and see if I can make the small, daily decisions needed for me to meet my goals. I’ll let y’all know how it goes once finals come around!
