Close But No Cigar | Mondays with Marnie

Some of the hardest decisions we make aren’t about the things that are obviously wrong.

They’re about the things that are almost right.

A relationship with so much potential, but not enough peace. A job that checks nearly every box, but leaves you feeling unfulfilled. A house that’s beautiful, but never quite feels like home.

It’s the “almosts” that keep us stuck.

We tell ourselves we can make it work. We convince ourselves that one missing piece isn’t that important. We spend so much energy trying to make something fit that we forget to ask if it ever truly did.

I’ve learned that “close” can quietly become a place where we settle.

Not because we’ve given up, but because walking away from something that’s almost right is incredibly difficult. There’s uncertainty in leaving. There’s the fear that maybe this was as good as it was going to get.

But I’ve also learned that every time I’ve been honest enough to say, This isn’t it, I’ve made room for something better.

Not perfect. Just right.

There’s a difference.

The right things don’t require you to constantly talk yourself into them. They may still take work. They may challenge you. But they don’t ask you to ignore that quiet voice inside that knows when something isn’t a fit.

Whether it’s a relationship, a career, a friendship, or a dream you’ve simply outgrown, it’s okay to admit that something is close…but no cigar.

Walking away isn’t always giving up.

Sometimes it’s trusting yourself enough to believe that “almost” isn’t where your story is supposed to end.

And when you make peace with letting go of what’s nearly enough, you create space for what truly belongs.
