The Warmth of the Fire | Mondays with Marnie

Lately, I’ve been feeling so grateful for my friends. I’m lucky to have some really good, supportive, and loyal people in my life — the kind of friends who show up, who listen, and who make ordinary moments feel special.

I came across a quote recently that stopped me in my tracks:

“I want the warmth of the fire, not just the glow of the flame.”

It made me think about how often we chase the glow in life — the things that look good on the outside. The fun social plans, the beautiful places, the shiny opportunities, or even relationships that sparkle at first glance. But when we slow down enough to really feel, we realize that not everything that glows gives warmth.

At 56, this has become a non-negotiable for me. I’m no longer interested in appearances — I’m interested in how something (or someone) makes me feel. Does it bring comfort? Connection? Peace? Does it fill me up or leave me feeling drained?

There’s a big difference between being drawn to something that looks bright and choosing something that truly sustains you. The glow can be fleeting — it’s pretty to look at, but it fades quickly. The warmth, though, lasts. It’s what keeps you grounded, safe, and alive in the best way.

Whether it’s people, work, or even how we spend our time, I think it’s worth asking: Is this the glow or the warmth?

I’m choosing the warmth. The real, steady, meaningful kind — in friendships, in love, in how I live each day. Because life’s too short to stand next to a pretty flame that doesn’t actually keep you warm.

XX,
