The Train Tracks Lesson | Mondays with Marnie

Last week, on my walk to the gym, I had to stop at the train tracks while a long train rumbled by. Standing that close, I could feel the power, size, and momentum of each car as it sped past. What struck me most was how different each car was—some were cylindrical, some rectangular, some open, others closed. I tried to catch a glimpse of what was inside the open cars, but they moved too quickly for me to see.

As I watched, I realized something important: none of the cars needed to be the same in order to move forward together. The only thing they had in common was the hitch that connected them. Each one was being pulled by the car in front of it, while pulling the car behind it. Different shapes, different functions, different contents—but still, they all moved together as one.

Life, and people, work in much the same way. We’re not meant to all look the same, think the same, or carry the same load. But we can connect to one another in the simplest and most powerful way: through our shared humanity. That connection—like the hitch on the train—is enough to pull each other along, and to let ourselves be pulled when we need help moving forward.

It’s a reminder that we don’t need perfect alignment to support one another. We just need the willingness to connect, to link arms, and to keep moving together.
