The Real Secret To Staying Young | Mondays with Marnie

Being in my 50s, a lot of my social media feed is filled with tips and tricks about health, wellness, and anti-aging. I’m shown everything from miracle supplements to the latest workout trends — all promising to keep me looking, feeling, and acting young.

But last week, while walking my dog, I was reminded that there’s something no workout routine or supplement can offer: human connection.

There’s an elderly woman in my neighborhood who often sits on the bench of her walker in her front yard. She lives alone, and I think she comes outside not just for the fresh air and sunshine, but for the chance to see people. Neighbors stop to say hello, and her face lights up when they do. Maggie, my dog, adores her — and the feeling is mutual. Every time we stop, she pets Maggie and tells me stories about all the animals she and her family have had over the years.

I’ve heard the stories more than once, but I always stay, listen, and let her share. Because when she’s talking about her past, she truly comes alive.

It struck me that loneliness might be one of the most overlooked challenges we face as we age — a silent killer. Research even shows that lack of social connection can impact health as much as smoking or obesity. But the flip side is just as powerful: connection, laughter, storytelling, and feeling seen can breathe life back into someone.

The truth is, we all need that. No matter how old we are, we thrive when we feel connected.

So here’s my challenge for us this week:

  • Wave at a neighbor.
  • Stop and talk to someone who might be feeling isolated.
  • Call a friend you haven’t spoken to in a while.
  • Listen — even if you’ve heard the story before.

The secret to staying young may not be in the supplements or the workouts, but in the way we show up for each other.

Because at the end of the day, human connection is what keeps us truly alive.
