Mondays with Marnie | Why Not YOU?

Why Not YOU?

Excuses have become swift answers and readily accepted reasons for why something doesn’t happen. The ‘ole, “My dog ate my homework” has become chump change in the world of excuses. These days, people seem to defer to a personal lacking of some sort as the excuse. Things like, I am not smart enough, I have ADD, I’m not athletic, I have anxiety, etc.

Truly determined people don’t look for excuses, they look for answers. I have been following the Olympics and noticed how many athletes have overcome injuries, illnesses, financial hardships and much more, only to find themselves on center stage, excelling despite these challenges.

One track star in particular caught my attention with his Instagram post. American, Noah Lyles, wrote, “I have Asthma, allergies, dyslexia, ADD, anxiety and Depression. But I will tell you that what you have does not define what you can become. Why Not You?”

Wow! Just Wow!

I think the willingness of athletes and performers to show their struggles and address mental health can be a game changer. I used to think that the people on top of their game and on stage in front of thousands of people must not struggle like the rest of us. I am learning that they face similar struggles and the difference is their decision to not make excuses. They don’t take no for an answer or see any reason it can’t be them on top of the podium as an Olympic medalist. Go USA and go YOU!
