Mondays with Marnie | The Blame Game

How many times have you heard someone say, “It’s not my fault” ? It’s a common response when siblings are in trouble. They are quick to place blame on their brother or sister, in hopes of avoiding being held responsible. I see this as an adult in the business world as well. A team of professionals will sit around pointing the finger at one another.

People want someone to blame if things don’t go the their way. In Houston, we are seeing bidding wars frequently in this market of low inventory. We are also seeing a higher percentage of cash buyers, which makes the usual all cash offer less of a unicorn in a multiple offer situation. Chances are, you are not the only one offering all cash. It is tricky because sometimes there is no rhyme or reason that a seller chooses to go with a certain contract over the others.

We love it when we win a bidding war and losing them is tough. A buyer lost in a multiple offer situation despite presenting an extremely attractive offer. Everyone was bummed because this seemed like the perfect house for him. Needing to find a reason the sellers chose to go with another buyer, it was time to figure out who was at fault. Guess who was blamed? It was the professionals involved in the transaction. The reasons were certainly not why the offer wasn’t selected but someone was going to take the blame. Trust me, the buyer’s agent wanted to win that bid as badly as the buyer.

I believe that some things are just not meant to be and despite doing our best, we may not come out on top. Thats life. You win some and you lose some. How you handle the loss is all about your character. Trust that rejection can be protection and that there is something better for you just around the corner. Grace is becoming less common and anger seems to have replaced it. Rather than playing the blame game the next time something doesn’t go your way, try responding gracefully. It will be remembered and people will want to work with you in the future.
