The Aftermath

Last week, I wrote about a severe storm that greatly impacted Houston. Since then, we have been dealing with the aftermath and always hoping that tomorrow will be a better day. Just when I thought it was pretty rough, I went on to badly burn the palm of my hand, get a stye on my eye and get some not so great news from my insurance company. But, what a difference a few days makes. My hand is much better, the stye is almost gone and the hole in the roof has been patched. This week looks to be on the up and up.

All of this made me think about the aftermath of other events that are less significant but impactful. For example, if someone cuts you off in traffic which causes you to get angry, the aftermath of that one event effects so many other events. If you were on your way to a meeting, the other attendees are met with an angry person instead of a calm person. This may make you on edge and less likely to be open to a compromise or agreement. If there isn’t cooperation at the meeting, this probably sends several frustrated people out into the world to be less patient with others. You get the idea. It’s a snowball effect and all of our decisions create a mini aftermath.

This week, I want to be mindful of what the aftermath of my actions and decisions may bring. I most certainly don’t want to be destructive like a storm. Clean up is hard. It is hard with property and it is hard with people. Let’s all do our part to not be the storm that causes damage to those around us.
