Mondays with Marnie | Potential

The definition of potential is: having or showing the capacity to become or develop into something in the future. A lot of decisions are made with weight on someone or something’s potential. We invest in start up companies based on the potential of them becoming something greater than they are today. We invest in our children in hope of helping them to fulfill their potential. The business deals are easier to predict but the human side of potential has always been a bit tricky. I have heard many parents talk about how sad it is that a child that had so much potential, turned out to be a certain way as an adult. They always seem so disappointed.

I began thinking about my own potential and if I was, in fact, living up to my potential. Shit, I don’t know! If I am honest, I would say that I am probably not living to my full potential. Yes, I consider myself to be a good mom, a hard worker, successful entrepreneur, a good friend and pretty darn fun. I have overcome quite a bit to achieve what I have so far and have broken family cycles and trends that put my children in a better position than I was in at their age. The last I heard, my mom just got married for the 9th time. Yes, really!!

Bravo to me. However, I know for sure that there is more that I am supposed to do. I started thinking of potential as a POT of traits, gifts and talents that we are born with and have at our disposal to use as we see fit. In my head, my pot is deep. It looks like one of those giant, metal pots that people use to fry turkeys. I could be full from the first half of the contents of a pot that large. Or, I could get a longer spoon and dig for the stuff near the bottom of the pot.

I am going to take the plunge and get the longer spoon. The curiosity is killing me and well, I just know that I am meant to fulfill a potential that I haven’t begun to tap into. Sometimes, a friend will say to me, “You should write a book,” or “You should (fill in the blank).”

I will begin by listening and being open to new ideas. Feel free to shoot me an idea if you know me well enough to have an opinion of something I could and should do, you know, given my “potential.” Of course, this will need to be done in my spare time, aside from selling real estate and being a mom. lol

Let’s all go for it!
