Mondays with Marnie | Fencing

Fencing.

What does a fence do? I looked it up and this is what I found:

“A fence acts as a deterrent for trespassers and intruders and keeps unwanted wild animals off of your property as well. Fences are not just designed to keep people and animals out, but they also keep things in, like children.”

Older homes tend to have chain link fences. I remember the one in my grandparents backyard. Currently, that is one of the first things people replace when remodeling.

As I was walking my dog last week, I noticed two men having a conversation in their backyards, each of them were standing on their own side of the chain link fence that separates their properties. Seeing this stopped me in my tracks. What a shame that this is rare. I hardly know my neighbors and never see them in the backyard. We all have 8 foot, wooden fences.

Fences are boundaries, which are healthy to have. Hypothetically, we should all have fences around us that serve as boundaries with other people. I want my fence to be a chain link fence. As much as it protects me, I want it to allow light, connection, vulnerability and availability to others. This isn’t always the prettiest fence but allows for the beautiful gift of connection to another human being. Watching Poland welcome Uklanianians into their country symbolizes the beauty of a chain link fence. Separate but unified.

MARKET STATS

Back in December, the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate issued was 3.11%. As of Friday, that 30-year rate is up to 3.92%.

In the long term, rising mortgage rates could slow down the housing market. After all, each uptick in mortgage rates prices out some buyers from the market. But the short-term impact is the opposite: Worried that rates will continue to shoot up, more homebuyers plunge into the market.
